Episode Watch Party S01 E19: “The Ballet”

Satirical commentary of I Love Lucy every Friday! Here’s all the WTFacts for this week.

This Week’s Episode:

“The Ballet”

Original Air Date:

February 18, 1952

This Week’s WTFacts:

Mary WickesIn the scene where Lucy gets pied in the face, you can hear Desi Arnaz’ distinctive laugh coming from off stage. If you listen reeeeally carefully, you can also hear Vivian Vance hating William Frawley.

Lucy’s close friend and neighbor Mary Wickes plays Madame Lamond. But you, Ballers, may know her best as Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act I & II, or as Aunt March in Little Women. I watch the latter 2x/year. My friends used to argue about how they were all just like Jo, and I could never make them realize that I’m LITERALLY a writer and my name is ACTUALLY Jo. The mature me totally doesn’t care, though.

I’m not through with Mary Wickes yet! She was one of Lucy’s best friends! She originated the role of Mary Poppins, was the live-action reference model for Cruella De Vil, and played a bus driving nun in TWO movie franchises! She originated and made famous the role of Nurse Preen from The Man Who Came to Dinner. She said once, “Women like me. They think I’m wholesome or something.” Except, evidently, she quietly shared an apartment in New York City for decades with her partner, playwright Abby Carson. WHY IS HER LIFE NOT A MOVIE?

See you Friday!
